Call to Action

Calling artists and designers to participate in the design and construction of a Mandala celebrating the theme of Interdependence at the 2007 Sustainable Living Festival.

Right now I am looking for help in these forms:

About the project

Construction of the work will take place on Saturday 17th february 2007 at the Sustainable Living Festival in Federation Square (Melbourne, Australia). It will located in the Dreamspheres project.

Extending upon the 2007 Sustainable Living Festival theme of “Sustainability: you’re a part of it”, the Interdependence Mandala helps us contemplate our interdependence not only on other people but our whole ecosystem for life, and also the consequences of our actions.

The project is requires the input of others to complete it, but also to enable reflection on the process of creating through to the choice of materials and it’s effect on the environment after the life of the mandala.

Inspirations

Inspiration for the Mandala comes from a number of sources: Tibetan Buddhist sand paintings, Indian Rangoli and similar traditions. And also through my own research and reflection as a practicing designer, including references such as William McDonough & Michael Braungart’s book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the way we make things.

Contributors

Anyone may contribute materials to help in the construction of the work and do not have to participate in the construction of the work.

Anyone is invited to participate in the design and construction of the work, but those involved in this process are requested to take part in the more deeply by also contributing to the materials meeting the specified requirements.

All are welcome, though of course participation is somewhat limited to those physically able to attend the festival held in Melbourne, Australia (though I am open to alternative suggestions!). See the list of contributors and what they are doing.
